Front Drive

The models featured on this page were done as an idealised expression to begin a preliminary exploration in form and function of a dedicated configuration for a

front wheel drive electric super bike.  

But, although these are conceptual representations all features and components were approached from a functional engineering perspective and a prototype is being planned on a similar profile as proposed here.

The only draw-back of a front wheel drive motorcycle is the loss of the iconic, show-off wheelie manoeuvre.

The bike introduced here will never launch out the bend prancing on the rear wheel with the front wheel begging towards the sky. The loss of that exhilarating image is an unfortunate sacrifice. 

But . . . .for the rider who wants to flip around the bend on a blip there will be no competition from rear-drive two-wheelers!

Catapulting acceleration is also much more controlled when this tractor wheel is firmly directed through the handlebars instead of a rear wheel forcing agaist the inertia.

The handling characteristics of this configuration may require a short acclimatisation period but after that there will be no going back.

A new class of bike racing will have to be established for this entirely new level of performance.

The envisioned machine as it is presented on this page is driven by 200 kW plus electric motor in a direct drive integration with the front hub. 


The front suspension is reconfigured to place the weight of the motor and wheel on a swing arm with the shock absorber vector aligned horizontally and above the wheel where it connects to the slewing bracket close to the steering head main bearing. The slewing bracket extends back behind the front wheel where it houses the swing arm pivot axis.

The swing arm is bridged across the wheel to house the shock absorber attach points and, as shown in the figure below, the debris projectile deflector ( "mud gaurd") is structurally integral to the swing arm.

With this configuration it is a simple matter to dynamically adjust the wheelbase on the fly. So the wheelbase is shortened as the bend is approached and then immediately extended out the bend and into the next straight.

The 200 kW electric motor in the front hub is powered by a generator driven by a diesel combusting turboshaft engine. The combustor configuration corresponds more to a diesel burner where combustion is remote from the main compressor stream and is pressurised by an electric driven centrifugal compressor. The combustion heat is then ducted through a coiled heat exchanger situated in the main compressor stream and the combustion gas is eventually exhausted through multiple jet nozzles directly onto the power turbine.

This engine configuration simplifies starting procedures and will bring the engine into full operation within 10 seconds. With a 3 to 4 kW DC motor driving the (diesel combustor) air compressor the power turbine, and therefore the main compressor bank, is immediately spinning even before combustion is ignited. 

The diesel combustor will elevate heat exchanger temperature to 800 deg Cand more within seconds and the heat exchanger/combustor exhaust jets increase impulse on the power turbine until the main compressor stream, now heated, overtakes the power function.

This engine is quite agricultural and inexpensive but Very powerful, light weight and efficient and the engine operation is entirely software controlled. 

The engine shaft is geared 2:1 to 3:1 to the A.C generator. The generator/alternator charges a relatively small bank of batteries. This battery bank allows 40 to 60 km cruising range at road ordinance speed limits.

Once a higher performance is demanded the control software responds by accelerating the turbo generator and the electric power is more directly ducted to the hub motor through a capacitor bank.
Compressed Air Powered

We are also considering powering the drive wheel by compressed air. In this scenario the turboshaft will be configured to drive an air compressor. This possibility is also very exciting and could actually be more efficient, lower in costs and much lighter in weight.

Here the turbine is reconfigured to entirely disconnect the adiabatic cycle and the main air reservoir will serve as the combustion air source. The compressor will obviously be of substantially higher capacity in order to power the drive wheel. It will deliver much higher pressure and increased air flow. The combustor is thus fed higher pressure air and the power turbine is therefore relatively much more efficient and powerful. The combustor and compressor are connected only by a drive shaft.

There are technical issues with this compressed air configuration pertaining to the Rude Brute design as it is presented here. At present the Trail Brute may be much more acceptable to the compressed air drive system.
